GFCI Location Requirements
- outlets with six feet of a sink
- Finished and unfinished basements
- Refrigerator (dedicated circuit)
- Laundry, utility, and wet bar within six feet of a sink
- Pool, spa water fountain, equipment (pumps, pool and spa lights)
- Boathouses
AFCI Location Requirements
Since the revision of the NEC in 2017, every 15 and 20-amp, 120-volt, single-phase branch circuit outlets for dwelling areas are required to have AFCI installed on them including:
- Bedrooms
- Kitchen
- Hallways and closets
- Laundry rooms
- Refrigerator (dedicated circuit)
- Common rooms (such as dens, living rooms & dining rooms)
- Finished basements
GFCI and AFCI Location Requirements
In these locations, dual function GFCI and AFCI can be used. A dual function outlet has both GFCI and AFCI protection.
